Before we get to the contents of the book, it must be said that the recent Pushkin Press edition is a satisfying object, reassuringly chunky with a nice clear font and an invitingly smooth cover. In the begining of the last century, Stefan Zweig was hugely successful and it puzzles me why I hadn't heard of him before the comissions for the book covers. A pity Paul VI suppressed the rest of the papal court–Noble Guard, Palatine Guard, Gendarmerie in Napoleonic dress uniforms, prince assistants at the throne, et al.–it was a riot of Let the forces of Mordor beware! But there's a big difference between understanding the past and being stuck in it. Alright, so the Gold Chains are gone and the Mohawk is receding, but the no-nonsense, tough guy attitude is just like I remember it. When I heard that three of my least favorite actors were going to be in a movie together, I knew I had to see it. Here in the arena of the inner man the big tournaments take place. €Beware of Pity” is the story, told in the first person, of a young officer in the Hussars, whose regiment is stationed on the Hungarian border just before the outbreak of WWI. Poignant, tragic, funny, outrageous –most of us have at least one story we tell (and retell) to explain our emotional bruises.
